All Star Cast Announced For Noel Fielding's Dick Turpin

By Bruce Dessau on 2/8/2023

The full cast has been announcement for the upcoming comedy-adventure series about Dick Turpin starring Noel Fielding as the legendary highwayman.

The Completely Made-Up Adventures of Dick Turpin will stream on Apple TV+.

Turpin always believed he was destined for something bigger than a life chopping meat in his dad’s butcher’s shop. And he was right. When he inadvertently becomes leader of the Essex Gang, a notorious bunch of outlaws, he realises he’s found his calling. Sure, he might be a peace-loving vegan who believes in panache over pistols, but what he lacks in hard-core highway skills he makes up for in imagination, invention and incredibly pointy purple shoes.

In this irreverent retelling, “The Completely Made-Up Adventures of Dick Turpin,” Dick is the most famous, but least likely of highway robbers, whose success is defined mostly by his charm, showmanship and great hair. Together with his gang of loveable rogues, Dick rides the highs and lows of celebrity – and does what he can to escape the clutches of the Thief Taker General.

The series is created by Claire Downes, Ian Jarvis and Stuart Lane, and written by Jon Brittain, Richard Naylor, Claire Downes, Ian Jarvis and Stuart Lane, with Noel Fielding. Streaming details will be confirmed at a later date.

Starring alongside Fielding are:

    • Duayne Boachie (“Hollyoaks,” “Blue Story”) as Honesty Courage, one of Dick’s Essex Gang. Honesty lives in the moment, it’s just not the same moment as everyone else. While admittedly sometimes slow on the uptake in high stress situations, he can be prone to moments of brilliant, blinding insight.
    • Hugh Bonneville (Emmy, Golden Globe & SAG Awards winner) (“The Gold,” “Paddington,” “W1A”) as Jonathan Wilde, has spent years climbing the greasy pole to become Thief Taker General. An utterly corrupt lawman with a vacuum where his morals should live, Wilde has a ferocious appetite to expand his criminal enterprise.
    • Asim Chaudhry (BAFTA TV Award and RTS Award winning “People Just Do Nothing,” “Black Mirror,” “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3”) as Craig the Warlock, is petrified of being caught performing magic without a licence. He’s attempted to pass his official warlock exams multiple times and racked up hundreds of major errors.
    • Tamsin Greig (Olivier Awards winner and BAFTA TV Awards nominated) (“Green Wing,” “Episodes,” “Friday Night Dinner”) as Lady Helen Gwinear, is the elected leader of the Syndicate, a union of organized crime groups with fingers in every pie from illicit eel husbandry to diamond smuggling. A working mother who fought her way up the greasy pole of the crime underworld, Helen is an uncompromising and brutal boss.
    • Mark Heap (“Friday Night Dinner,” “Green Wing”) as John Turpin, Hempstead’s irascible butcher. Lover of meat; hater of vegetables. He hides his affection for only son, Dick, under a layer of cynicism so deep not even a meat cleaver could penetrate it.
    • Ellie White (“’Wonka,” “Stath Lets Flats”) as Nell Brazier, one of Dick’s Essex Gang, has dreamed of being a highwayman since she was a little girl. Brought up in luxury, Nell threw away dresses for ditches and ran away at sixteen to make it on her own.
    • Joe Wilkinson (“After Life,” “The Cockfields”) as Geoffrey the Gaoler, the ultimate nihilist, who will tout his mediocre services to anyone in need of a jailer, security guard or general dogsbody – no questions asked.
    • Marc Wootton (British Comedy Award and Rose d’Or Award winning “My New Best Friend,” “Nativity!,” TV series “La La Land”) as Moose Pleck, one of Dick’s Essex Gang, is a terrifying looking man-mountain; but on the inside he’s just a big old softie. After years of being terrorised by various brutal gang leaders, he’s convinced he’s found his soulmate in Dick.

  • Additional series regulars are Michael Fielding as Benny Turpin, Kiri Flaherty as Little Karen, Samuel Leakey as Christopher Wilde, Geoff McGivern as Lord Rookwood, and Dolly Wells as Eliza Bean.
  • Guest stars include Laura Checkley as Sandra, Greg Davies as Leslie Duvall, Jessica Hynes as The Reddlehag, Paul Kaye as Ratclyff, Guz Khan as Gow, Diane Morgan as Maureen, Connor Swindells as Tommy Silversides, and David Threlfall as Tom King.

The storyline remains a mystery for the time being.

First-look images from Steven Moffat’s thriller Inside Man have been revealed, giving us our first look at David Tennant, Stanley Tucci and other big name cast members in the mysterious project.

Plot details are being kept tightly under wraps for the four-part series, which is scheduled to launch on BBC One and BBC iPlayer next year, with only a brief (and very cryptic) synopsis released thus far.

It teases that the show will follow a prisoner on death row in the United States (played by Tucci), a vicar in a quiet English town (Tennant) and a maths teacher trapped in a cellar, whose lives intersect in a “most unexpected way”. Your guess is as good as ours.

Despite the lack of details, Inside Man is shaping up to be one of the BBC’s most-anticipated upcoming dramas, with Moffat and executive producer Sue Vertue describing the all-star cast as the “best ensemble we’ve ever had the chance to work with”.

Ben Irving, Commissioning Editor for BBC Drama, added: “Steven Moffat has created another brilliantly original and darkly playful series in Inside Man and it’s no surprise that it has attracted such an extraordinary cast. This will be a ‘must-watch’ when it lands on BBC One and iPlayer next year.”

The first-look images include a sneak peek at Tennant in his role as small-town vicar Harry Watling after a service (above), as well as an advance look at Tucci’s death row inmate Jefferson Grieff as he is led down a gloomy prison corridor.

It’s A Sin breakout star Lydia West will also star in BBC One’s Inside Man as Beth Davenport, with the image below revealing she is connected to Tucci’s prisoner, but there’s no word yet on whether she’s his lawyer, a reporter, a relative or someone else entirely.

Dolly Wells in Inside Man

Dolly Wells reunites with Moffat following their collaboration on 2020’s three-part Dracula series, seen grinning in this initial reveal of her character, who goes by the name Janice Fife.

The final image from Inside Man introduces Hanna star Lyndsey Marshal as another key character in the show, Mary Watling, who will presumably be some relation to Tennant’s vicar – most likely his wife or sister.

Accompanying these images was an announcement detailing Inside Man’s supporting cast, which includes Atkins Estimond (Hightown), Mark Quarterly (Cursed), Tilly Vosburgh (Maigret), Louis Oliver (Midnight Mass), Kate Dickie (The Witch) and Dylan Baker (Hunters).

Inside Man is coming next year to BBC One and BBC iPlayer.

Inside Man

EXCLUSIVENetflix has boarded its latest BBC drama, taking the international rights to Steven Moffat’s limited series Inside Man, which has assembled a stellar above-the-line cast ahead of production taking place later this year.

Deadline can reveal that Oscar-nominated Supernova and Spotlight star Stanley Tucci has been set in the title role of the Inside Man, while he will be joined by Doctor Who and Des actor David Tennant, and The Pursuit of Love and Dracula star Dolly Wells. Rounding out the headline cast is Lydia West, who featured in the acclaimed Channel 4/HBO Max series It’s A Sin.

Doctor Who and Sherlock writer Steven Moffat is keeping plot details firmly under wraps, so much so that only he himself knows how the story will conclude. That means Netflix and the BBC are in the dark about how Inside Man will end.

What we do know is the four-part Hartswood Films series centers on a prisoner on death row in the U.S., a vicar in a quiet English town, and a maths teacher trapped in a cellar, as they cross paths in the most unexpected way.

Sherlock director Paul McGuigan will helm the series, with Alex Mercer producing. Executive producers are Sue Vertue for Hartswood Films and Ben Irving for the BBC. Chris Sussman oversees for Netflix. Inside Man was first commissioned in 2019 by BBC drama director Piers Wenger and Charlotte Moore, BBC chief content officer.

Husband and wife Moffat and Vertue said they can’t wait to “crawl out of our lockdown bunker” to get to work on the series, which Sussman described as “fiendishly clever.” Wenger added that the combination of the script and cast will create “television magic.”

BBC Studios brokered the deal with Netflix, which will stream the show outside of the UK and Ireland. It’s another example of the BBC and Netflix partnering on a major drama, with other recent examples including The Serpent and the upcoming supernatural horror series Red Rose.

Inside Man has echoes of Moffat and Mark Gatiss’ 2020 series Dracula, which was also a co-production between the BBC and Netflix. The three-part series also starred Wells and West in the retelling of Bram Stoker’s legendary story of a blood-sucking count from Transylvania.

Tucci is repped by CAA, Curtis Brown and Anonymous Content, while Tennant is repped by Independent Talent and UTA. Wells’ representatives are Independent Talent, UTA, and Anonymous Content, and West is rep
